So, it doesn't matter how fast, how often or how far - EVERYONE can run! Even if it’s just a few steps, our bodies are designed to move. I'm not saying running is easy, it can be pretty challenging, even when you run a lot! But the good news is.......... you can make it easier for yourself! I can show you how, and who knows, you might actually enjoy it :-)
It all began for me when......
I started running as a way to lose weight after my second baby, I'd never run before and my overriding feeling was that I wasn’t very good, I was self conscious and worried a lot about what other people would think. BUT it was a quick way to exercise (without the hassle of getting myself to a gym), so I stuck with it and am so glad I did. Having started with a 5-10 minute run around the block I slowly built up the distance, and with it came my confidence. I started feeling good about myself and each time would push to go a little further.
Running; my mental break
When my marriage broke down, I had 3 children at a very young age and running was my ‘escape’ to get just 30 minutes by myself. I'd ask my mum to come over just so I could go for a run. It was amazing as it allowed me time to think and get my head in a good place to make the right decisions.
But seriously, isn't running hard…….?
YES!!! I still find it hard now! It never gets any easier for me, but once I'm back I honestly feel GREAT about myself, just getting out in the fresh air, getting those positive endorphins pumping and knowing the good I've done for my body. I now run regularly and have completed several half marathons and marathons (not bad from just a 5 minute run around the block, imagine what you could do!), I've made lots of friends and learnt a few things along the way to make running a little easier, such as:
Plan your route - start with small loops, once you feel confident you can start to extend it further
Start by walking and jogging in small intervals, gradually build up the jogging time over the walking and you’ll be running more than you walk. Start with 30 seconds running, working towards a running minute, then 2 minutes etc.
Learn to breathe properly during your runs, in through the nose out through the mouth. When you feel short of breath this really helps!
Put your headphones in and listen to a decent playlist, it really does distract you from your heavy breathing and the pounding of the pavements
Running takes time, if after 1 run you don’t like it, don’t just give up, keep practicing, just remember, patience and consistency are the key
Do you need help with your running? Maybe your core is weak? Maybe it’s your upper body? So many people think to be a good runner you just need to constantly run the miles and maintain the distance. Yes it definitely helps! But it's about the whole body and putting it into 'cross training'. You need a strong core (to avoid injuries), good upper body strength and good lower body strength. Get in touch! I’m here to help you.
